Q & A

No. Breast cancer is the catalyst for the story, but STAGE 3 is ultimately about what happens when the life you expected collides with the life you are given.
It uses honesty, humor and raw experience to explore faith, fear, identity, survival, and the difficult work of finding yourself again after life changes without your permission.
Cancer is my disruption, but the Valley can take many forms—loss, disappointment, illness, divorce, grief, betrayal, or any circumstance that leaves you wondering how to move forward when the life you knew no longer feels like your own.
-
STAGE 3 is for anyone who has ever found themselves standing in the middle of a life they did not plan.
It’s for survivors, caregivers, people navigating loss or profound change, and anyone who has questioned their purpose during a dark season or struggled to reconcile who they were with who they are becoming.
You do not have to share my diagnosis to recognize the Valley. You only have to know what it feels like when life changes—and you have to decide what comes next.

Yes. STAGE 3 was written with the kind of honesty that naturally invites conversation—about faith, fear, family, body image, survival, humor, identity, and what happens after the crisis everyone else thinks is over.
Those themes can make the memoir especially well suited for book clubs, support communities, faith-based groups, and organizations interested in conversations about resilience and reclamation.

PURPOSE
What happens when life creates a before-and-after you did not choose — and then you have to figure out how to live inside the after?
While STAGE 3 is rooted in my cancer journey, its deeper story reaches beyond diagnosis.
A person who has never had cancer may still recognize themselves in these pages. Their rupture may have been abuse. Divorce. Grief. Homelessness. Job loss. Betrayal. Infertility. Financial collapse. Or any life-altering circumstance that divided their story into before and after.
Whatever the disruption, they may know the unsettling experience of thinking:
“My life is technically mine, but I don’t recognize it anymore.”
That is the universal doorway into STAGE 3.
It is a story about disruption, identity, survival, reclamation, and the difficult work of learning how to belong to yourself again.
About the Book
STAGE 3: My Journey Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death is a story about what happens when the life you expected collides with the life you are given — and how you begin reclaiming yourself when survival alone is no longer enough.
It asks what happens after something changes you so completely that returning to who you were is no longer possible.
And then it asks the harder question:
Who do you choose to become from here?
At its heart, STAGE 3 moves through three interconnected spaces:
Disruption
When faith, expectations, experience, and reality no longer align.
Aftermath
When the crisis may technically be over, but your mind, identity, body, or life has not caught up.
Reclamation
When you begin moving forward intentionally, not by returning to who you were, but by building a life that belongs to the person you have become.
It explores what happens when disappointment collides with faith, when reality no longer resembles the future you imagined, and when the body survives before the mind fully understands what has happened.
Ultimately, STAGE 3 asks:
How do you redefine a life that is yours, but no longer quite feels like it belongs to you?
This is where survival, vision, and transformation meet.
It is not simply about getting through what happened.
It is about learning how to live afterward — and how to belong to yourself again.

About Traci N. Perry, M.A.
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE VISION
“I believe our deepest disruptions aren’t the end of our identity—they are the threshold where our real purpose begins.”
Traci N. Perry is an author, speaker, and advocate whose work explores what happens when life changes without permission—and how we begin finding our way back to ourselves afterward.
A Southern California native, Traci earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and her master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University. Her professional career has sharpened her understanding of people, organizations, communication, and the complicated ways we navigate change. Her personal life would eventually teach her those lessons in an entirely different way.
In 2023, Traci was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and the long emotional aftermath of treatment disrupted not only her body, but her understanding of the life she thought she knew. That experience became the foundation for her debut memoir, STAGE 3: My Journey Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
But the diagnosis is only one part of Traci’s story.
